Facebook Adds Ability to Create and Share 3D Photos by @MattGSouthern

Facebook has introduced the ability to share 3D photos that can be viewed by anyone with the mobile app.

Users can also view 3D photos in VR on the Oculus Go and Oculus Rift.

Capturing 3D photos is limited to users with a dual-lens camera on their smartphone.

The technology works by capturing the distance between the subject in the foreground and background, which is why a dual-lens camera is necessary.

Users first have to take a photo in portrait mode on their device. Then they can share the photo in the Facebook app by selecting the “3D Photo” option.

When viewing the photo users can scroll, pan, and tilt their phone to see the photo in 3D. Facebook describes it as being similar to looking through a window.

Facebook offers the following pieces of advice when sharing 3D photos.

Create layers

Users will get the best results if the main subject is three or four feet away.

Facebook recommends having something in the background as well as the foreground. In other words, using a blank backdrop is not recommended.

Be mindful of contrast

The 3D effect will be more noticeable when the subject of the photo has contrasting colors.

For example, it will be less effective if the subject is wearing the same color as the color featured in the background.

Use texture

Certain materials and textures make for better 3D photos. Facebook recommends subjects that have texture, solid edges, and are not too shiny.

Subjects to avoid in 3D photos include objects like clear plastic or glass because they’re not always captured accurately by the depth sensors.

The ability to create and share 3D photos is rolling out now and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.
